Frequently Asked Questions

Q: We originally planned a huge wedding but have decided to elope instead; could we fly to the BVI and get married the next day?

A: No; you must be in the country for at least three working days prior to the wedding date.

Q: I don’t want a pre-arranged package; I’d like to create my own package. Can this be done?

A: Certainly; a la carte is very much in order.

Q: What is the difference between a religious ceremony and a civil ceremony?

A: A Minister of the Gospel conducts a Religious Ceremony whereas a Civil Ceremony is non-religious and is conducted by a Civil Marriage Officer. However, you may add your own religious flavour, using family and friends.

Q: What is the best time of the year for our wedding ceremony?

A: Since these islands are situated in the Tropics with an average high temperature of 88ºF (32ºC), you can choose to get married at any time during the year.

Q: My fiancée and I would like to get married at 5:00 a.m., would this pose a problem?

A: The law mandates that marriages may only be performed between the hours of 6.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m.

Q: We are arriving on a cruise ship and would like to get married on the same day. How do we go about doing this?

A: It is not possible to get married on the same day that you visit on your cruise; you must be in the country for at least three working days prior to the wedding date.

Q: Can our wedding consultant arrange accommodations and ground transportation for us?

A: Yes; that and more. Just let us know your needs and leave the rest to us.

Q: On what islands can we get married?

A: You may choose one of our many islands of the British Virgin Islands including Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Cooper Island, Saba Rock, and Prickly Pear Island.

Q: How soon after the wedding ceremony do we receive our marriage certificate?

A: You receive the Marriage Certificate immediately after the wedding ceremony.

Q: My fiancée and I come from two different cultures and religions, but would like to incorporate both into the ceremony. Is this possible?

A: Yes; the ceremony can be adapted to suit your wishes.

Q: What documents do we need when making application for a Marriage Certificate?

A: If you have not been previously married, all you need are your passports.

Q: This is not my first marriage. Are there any other documents that should be submitted with our application?

A: In addition to your passports, you must submit the ORIGINAL Decree Absolute or Death Certificate, whichever applies.

Q: Does it matter how we are attired for our wedding ceremony?

A: Clothing is required, but there are no restrictions on the mode of dress.

Q: If I get married in the BVI, is it legal?

A: A Marriage Certificate issued in the British Virgin Islands is recognized everywhere in the world.
